Income and Profitability in Mining and Manufacturing - Free Samples

Question: Examine about the Income and Profitability in Mining and Manufacturing. Answer: Presentation The point of this examination is to investigate relationship that exists among salary and gainfulness of an association thinking about the mining and assembling businesses. The examination would respond to a key research question, which is Does the pay and gainfulness relationship vary in thee instances of mining from assembling segment in Australia? It has been seen that in recent years, the two divisions show differential development designs and the exploration would make an endeavor to comprehend the causes behind these distinctions. For this, an auxiliary information would be gathered from Australian Bureau of insights on the two business from the year 2006. The information would incorporate salary and working benefits before charge the executives. This information would be gathered into two factors including the pay as autonomous and benefit as the needy variable and the measurable strategies would be raced to decide the degree to which pay and benefit varieties relate with one another. For this, a relationship and relapse methodology would be utilized between the two factors. Be that as it may, before this should be possible, it is basic to examine the foundation of the examination and along these lines, the report would initially investigate the reasonable structure of this exploration to comprehend the essentials and afterward would investigate existing inquires about directed on a similar subject to investigate what is now known. The writing study holes would be dissected which would legitimize the picked approach for this examination the executives (Walliman, 2011). This area clarifies the ideas that are the establishment of the ebb and flow investigate. These incorporate a comprehension of the connection among salary and productivity of an association or modern division and investigation of the two significant enterprises remembering digging and assembling for Australia to survey their exhibition in the nation as for incomes and benefit. This calculated establishment would uncover bits of knowledge that would help settle on a choice on what information must be gathered to have the option to achieve the target of the ebb and flow research(Yong, 2015). Pay and Profitability relationship Income or pay alludes to the aggregate sum that an association wins through deals. Nonetheless, all the while, the organization additionally acquires certain consumptions. These costs must be deducted from the pay to show up at the figure of benefit. On it, the organization additionally needs to pay burdens that are additionally diminished from the benefit add up to get to the last figure of the net benefit. Net overall revenue can be determined by partitioning the net benefit by the complete pay created for a particular span. An association takes choice on what incomes to be created dependent on how the benefits are accomplished for each dollar gain. For example, if the overall revenue of an item were 7%, the item would have the option to procure $1 as benefit if $14 is acquired as a revenue(Greener, 2008). Assembling area in Australia has seen a decrease in recent years in light of its diminishing commitment to GDP due to diminished yield. The chart underneath shows how portion of assembling in GDP item has been declining ceaselessly throughout the years in Australia(Deloitte , 2016).Profitability can be acquired from the gross working net revenue as certain level of pay created from the offer of merchandise and ventures. Net revenue of the business has additionally decreased during a similar time from 9.55 in 2001 to 7.8 in 2014 in the assembling segment not at all like different business segments where overall revenues are expanded. As the diagram appears, the various businesses set up, the gross overall revenue expanded from 10.9 to 12.7% during the equivalent time(Kryger, 2014). Mining Industry The mining division has encountered cost falls yet its business volumes are expanding as the business advances into creation. Prior to 2015, the economy confronted a speculation blast which has decreased in 2016. The year 2016 was overwhelmed by administration segment that gives the biggest portion of the yield. Conversely, the mining part is into the creation stage and fares are expanding. During a similar time, the Australian dollar tumbled from its pinnacle of $1.08 USD to $0.71 USD(Cottarelli, 012). Lately, an extreme decline in the efficiency of the mining area watched in light of specific elements like increment in ware costs that lead to increment in costs acquired during creation work. It was at first anticipated that mining would be on the top among ventures in Australia after it went into the creation stage moving ceaselessly from speculation stage the executives. The real outcome was an expansion in the yield of mining and accordingly, an increment in the fare caapcities of the sector(Prepare for Australia, 2017). In the year 2004, mining industry started to ascend in its commitment to GDP, which came to 11%. This expansion in the yield of the mining business could be significantly added to extraction of oil and gas, iron, coal, and different metals. Between the years 2004 and 2008, there was a tremendous ascent in the creation of coal, iron metal, and gas(Reserve Bank of Australia, 2009). There were eminences to be paid on the creation of mining which must be decreased from the pay acquired from the deals of the mining produce. The eminences over mining yield expanded around 25% somewhere in the range of 2003 and 2008 while ventures expanded by 30%. Development in pay impacts the productivity of a modern unit and gainfulness goes about as a determinant of the estimation of the association. Pay and productivity figures are frequently utilized in key examinations for showing the authoritative execution. Budgetary proportions can be exceptionally valuable for clarifying how the targets of incomes and benefits are accomplished. These proportions remember return for deals, return on resources, and profits for value. Profit for value is a well known measure for money and it is determined as net revenue X resource turnover X budgetary influence. According to this equation, an expansion in the monetary influence can result into an expansion in the pay of the association. Notwithstanding, simultaneously, it can likewise expands the fixed expenses of the organization and subsequently, add unpredictability to the earning(Chen Mintz, 2010). The net overall revenue is the proportion of benefits to deals, it gives the benefits that are gotten after annual assessments, and costs are deducted from the pay. It fills in as an incredible proportion of an organizations adequacy and reflects upon how well the functioning capital has been utilized by an association. This measurement can likewise be valuable in making examination of the companys execution with others in an industry. Net benefit doesn't show genuine incomes since it can include certain non-money costs, for example, deterioration, amortization, and gathered expenses(Richardson Denniss, 2011). In Australia, the mining business has gone into a creation stage after the speculation stage that kept going till 2015. This has come about into increment in the yield and in the fares. Enormous returns were created by the Australian mining association by sending out to the Asian nations. In any case, presently the division is on a decay again with the end goal that their benefits can fall in not so distant future except if the associations realign their cost structures as indicated by their changed abilities. Somewhere in the range of 2002 and 2011, the ascent is seen in both the volumes and costs with 18% and 11% yearly development individually. The business is significantly profited by rising yield however not by the benefit development, as it was just minor due to falling costs. Coal costs were dropped by 35% while iron metal costs fell by 30% in the year 2011(Vandenberg, et al., 2011). Valuing constrains kept on rising to such an extent that the economy can adapt to the ascent in swelling. The concealment in benefits can likewise be accounted to presentation of carbon and mineral asset charges. Thinking about this circumstance, mining industry needs to take a relook on its methodologies and figure out how to manage the circumstance of expanding creation costs and falling yield costs. Organizations following the customary methodology will most likely be unable to make the ventures gainful and new economical methodologies are required to be explored(Connolly Orsmond, 2011). An increasingly educated methodology called fit for development including increment in serious situating and increment in returns can be taken by the business in the event that it needs to build its efficiency and decrease costs so productivity can be upgraded. Steps that can help in accomplishing this destinations incorporate improvement of abilities, defend cost, getting hierarchical help, and expanding yield without influencing costs(ABS, 2018). There can be a few open doors for decreasing expenses of the mining division, for example, defense of undertaking portfolio, combination of overhead structures, legitimization of item reviews, advancement of move structures, improvement of support forms, exit from explicit minerals that may not be productive enough, utilization of various mining strategies, for example, underground investigation, and work of remote mine operators(Hollander, et al., 2018'). Assembling area of Australia on the opposite side has lost its energy as the yield creation has eased back down. There is a wide hole among evaluating and the weight on overall revenues is expanding. This requests for a decrease in working expenses and cut down on speculations with the end goal that edges can be preserved(Scutt, 2018). Information would be gathered through the online database of Australian Bureau of Statistics. The information would be gathered for mining and assembling parts. This information would incorporate figures of pay from deals and net revenues for mining and assembling ventures in Australia including distinctive industry bunches from Manufacturing and mining divisions. In the assembling business, the industry gatherings would incorporate modern products and shopper great

Essay Censorship Is Wrong - 846 Words

Censorship: an official authorised to examine printed matter, films, news, etc., before public release, and to suppress any parts on the grounds of obscenity, a threat to security, etc. (Dictionary, MS Encarta) Censorship is the removal of material from public viewing or the ability to withhold any material from being released. Using this definition, this issue of pornography seems to be in the grey area of the censorship debate. On the one side there are the people who want to protect their children from pornography and violence, and on the other people state that the Internet is the only medium which still openly accepts freedom of speech. Censorship is always wrong, no matter how unpleasant the material being considered. The†¦show more content†¦Pornography is the explicit, sexual images that we wish to protect our children from, but there are other ways. It is estimated that sexually explicit sites are the only sites on the Web making money, even though there is so much competition. Using this information we can assume that the majority of the people on the Internet want and use this pornography at their own leisure and are not at all offended by it in the slightest. Further research has shown that in Australia 70% of (the) people want X-rated material readily available. There is a market out there for such material and if the Internet is censored, many successful businesses will become ‘unacceptable’ to the rules and guidelines set by the censors, but if we want it, it should be allowed to be accessible. The fact that people want the pornography still doesn’t stop the Internet from being under fire from concerned parents and politicians. What matters are the people’s rights. The freedom to read, and censorship fails to address issues of privacy and the freedom to use such services. The Internet is anonymous which makes it better for consumers as their reputations don’t suffer. However, minorities would suggest that because of this anonymity on the Internet, ages cant be monitored, which makes it hard to determine if illegal activities are taking place. It is worth mentioning that all sex sites on the Internet require proof of age by the use of credit cards. The sex sites are interested inShow MoreRelated Censorship of Print Media is Wrong Essay840 Words   |  4 PagesCensorship of Print Media is Wrong      Ã‚  Ã‚   The printed media is undeniably a very powerful source used to communicate. `` The Knight s Tale `` For My Final Assignment - 1202 Words

Author’s Note The fact that nowadays Chaucer is studied, discussed, and read means that his works are still interesting for modern readers. They are great pieces that shaped literature as we know it today. However, apart from that, The Canterbury Tales written in the 14th century catches readers’ attention now because it is a collection of brilliant stories with plots so old that they seem very fresh and extraordinary in a stream of modern literature. Still, as we perfectly understand, social realities, beliefs, values, and tastes change and something in The Canterbury Tales have probably got outdated since the 14th century. Due to this reason, I decided to modernize â€Å"The Knight’s Tale† for my final assignment. My main concern about this text is that it does not adequately reflect social and gender roles. It is extremely one-sided and focused mostly on men. Women in it are represented, but they are passive, voiceless, and objectified. In my story, I h ave tried to make both women and men whole persons with their will, ambitions, and path. The Knight’s Tale There was a man who was called Theseus. In his late forties, he was a CEO in a private security company known all over the globe, and his contribution to the field was acknowledged and respected. The airline customers can be divided into ordinary and the frequent flyers and the frequent flyers would especially be helpful from this new information system. Identifying Scope and Boundaries Every project has certain scope as well as boundaries and the boundaries make sure that the daily operations are followed within those boundaries. The boundaries are created with the help of certain set of rules and regulation and the people in the project make sure that the rules and the regulations are followed properly and there should not be any breaching of these set of boundaries. The project scope contains a boundary statement and this particular boundary statement is applicable only to those areas that are there within the project scope. Since every project have certain amount of boundary therefore, this particular project too is not an exception and this particular project has a boundary at the same time, and the division between the two kinds of customers forms one kind of boundary. The Holiday.Inc Airline has two kinds of customers the ordinary and the frequent flyer, therefore, the customer of this airline company could be divided into these two main types, and along with it, there are two types of reservation system, one the ordinary flyer and the other the frequent flyer. The ordinary flyers are those, who do not travel by air on a regular basis and thus, they could not make their payments through cheque or cash and if they have to make their payment, they would have to use the credit card option only. Moreover, the ordinary flyers are not offered any kinds of discounts, as it is being offered to the frequent flyers, and at the same time, the ordinary flyers could not easily cancel their reservation as well. Identifying Stakeholders The stakeholders that are required for the new information system of the airline are the following people: CEO of the company is the most important person in the company since the company is a startup company. Therefore, it is important that the CEO of the company carries out all the responsibilities effectively and at the same time should assist the managers in the daily operations. Finance Manage ensures the maximum return on investment and at the same time, the finance manager ensures minimum risk that is being incurred for the company. The fianc manager also ensures that there is adequate control structure for the purpose of transfer and investment of funds. Account Manager makes sure that the staffs are receiving their payments in time and at the same time; the account manger ensures that the incentive that the staff receives due regular appraisal is being transferred on time. It is the job of the account manager to look after the progress stakeholders and the quarterly internal and external initiatives at the same time. Apart from these few people there are other people as well, who could be identified as the important stakeholder, which include the General and the Assistant manager, the frequent flyers, the human resource manager, the complaint and the security officer. Along with it, there is the marketing officer and the ordinary flyer and most importantly, the general staff forms the important stakeholders of the airline company. Conducting Stakeholder Analysis- Objective and Business Requirement The policies or the new information system that would be implemented in the organization would affect the stakeholders and at the same time, it may affect them as well. The CEO of the company is the most important part of the company therefore; CEO should identify the need for implementing the new information system in the company (Chevalier 2016). The finance manager of the company is responsible for sponsoring the project, without sufficient sponsor, it would not be possible for the company to implement the new information system in the company, which would beneficial for the customers of the company (XUE, SU and SHI 2015). The new information system implementation requires well-trained and sound employees in the organization and it is the job of the human resource manager to carry on the recruitment of such employees (Lienert, Schnetzer and Ingold 2013). Along with recruiting well-trained and skilled employees it is important that the existing employees are given pro[per training and thus there should be an implementation of the training and the knowledge program in the company, so that the general staff of the company do not find any problem in using this new interface (Buchanan 2014). The human resource manager here plays an important role in carrying on the training and development program for the staff, those who are there in the organization (Martin, Evans, Rice, Lodhia and Gibbons 2016). The new information system or the interface could create problem for the customers and they find it difficult in case of using it, thus the complaint officer is responsible for handling all these problems and providing a perfect solution to all these problems (Elgin. and Weible, 2013). The marketing manager is responsible for providing this particular input in the annual marketing plan of the airline schemes. The ordinary and the frequent flyers are the target group who would be benefitted from this particular implementation of a new interface or the information system (Maguire, Potts and Fletcher 2012). Stake Holder Key Interest Importance to Project Influence on Project Participation CEO Providing Customer Satisfaction High, since the CEO is the implementer. (Lim, Damian, Ishikawa and Finkelstein 2013.) High, since he is the one who will initiate the project Participate at all levels, to support every people engaged in different operations. Finance Manager Ensuring Maximum Return and Minimum Risk High, since he is going to finance the project, or rather provide sponsor to it. High, since he/she would ensure adequate control, transfer and investment. Engage in the initial level of financing the project. HR Manager Responsible for managing the staff of the organization. Medium, since the HR manager recruits the well-trained staff and at the same time, provides training to the staff. High, since the HR manager is responsible for providing those staffs who would lead to the successful implementation of the project. Engage in the recruitment and the training level. Complaint Officer Handling all the complaints Low, since the complaint officer is responsible only for eliminating the complaint, if at all there is any. Low Get engaged after the project has been implemented. Flyer Receiving the service Low, as they are at the receivers end. High, since they are the target group. Get engaged after the implementation of the project. (Figure 1: The Stakeholder Analysis Plans for quality assurance testing: Quality assurance testing is an important aspect in order to implement any system into the business processes. Hence, Holidays Inc. will have to implement quality assurance testing so that the proposed systems can successfully implement in business environment. Types of QA testing will have to performed by Holidays Inc. According to Galliers and Leidner (2014) quality assurance plan is an umbrella that encompasses all the testing required for implementing a particular project successfully. Hence, test plan of Holidays Inc proposed information system would have to consider many factors, which will help the organization to fulfill the purpose. Holidays Incs quality assurance planning will include: Process QA plan: this will allow the organization to meet the compliance and quality standard that is required to handle the customers of the organization. Application test plan: This will allow Holidays Inc to identify the kind of technical requirements it had to implement this information system QA plan also have to include development efforts: Unit test plan: This will allow to evaluate all the proposed system effectively Integrated system testing plan: This testing will include end-to-end testing regarding the functionality of all the system application Since, implementation of new information system in the business environment is a high risk investment, QA testing will also include the following: Regression testing: It will help Holidays Inc to identify the necessary changes that had to be made on the proposed system in order to make it functions effective for the proposed company. Conversion integration application testing: This will help to analyze the performance of the proposed system at the initial implementation period. This is extremely important, as it will provide an idea about the kind of impact it can have in future in the businesses processes of Holidays Inc. Proof of concept: This test will allow Holidays Inc. to be sure that the propose system will allow the company to handle its processes in an effective way. Alpha testing: This test will allow Holidays Inc. to identify the places or areas where the proposed system will have major impacts. It will also allow identifying the kind of bugs or viruses can have impact on the proposed system (Kerzner 2013). This is very important, as it will allow Holidays Inc. to take precautionary actions much more effectively, which will have positive impact on the operational process of the Holidays Inc. Pilot testing: this testing will help Holidays Inc. to improve the day-to-day business processes of the company. Particularly, as the organizations is focusing on to the implementation of combinations of system, this testing will allow the company to limit the impact of the variables that can have negative impact on the operational processes of Holidays Inc. Parallel testing: This testing is extremely effective when an organization is planning to implement several systems simultaneously (Willcocks 2013). Since, it allows organizations to identify whether each and every system is working according to its specification or not. Thus, Holidays Inc. also will have to perform this test smoothen the operational process of the organization. Stress testing: This testing will allow Holidays Inc. to identify the effectiveness of the proposed system during peak time. Thus, it will allow Holidays Inc. to test whether or not the proposed system has the capability to handle all the customers of the organization effectively. Required number of individuals From the above mentioned number of testing, it can be evaluate that Holidays Testing is looking to implement an in-depth analysis on the proposed system to make sure that it works according to its expectation. Thus Holidays Inc. will have to implement three teams and each will have five members so that QA test can be completed within the timeframe. Required time As Holidays Inc is facing trouble in handling its daily processes, QA testing will have to complete within the shortest period of time. As a result, five days considered for Quality assurance testing. Plan for change management: Change management is a process that required planning from the organization. Otherwise, it might create huge amount of negative impact on the operational process of the company. Hence, Holidays Inc will have to follow sequence of steps that is described as follows: Figure 1: Change management process Step 1: To manage the changes, Holidays Inc first has to identify the areas or the factors that has the higher probability to affect by the proposed implementation of the information system (Wu et al. 2013). This identification is a very important, as it will help Holidays Inc to develop a counter strategy for the change that is happening in the Holidays Inc. Otherwise, it will be very hard for Holidays Inc to handle the changes much more effectively. Step 2: Next step of change management will have to focus on the reasons for which the identified are affecting at the most (Schwalbe 2015). This will allow Holidays Inc to develop strategies, which will help to counter the negative impact of the implemented systems. As new system introduction required specific skills from the employees as well in order to handle the new system in a much more effective way. Step 3: This step will have to focus about the particular of change. In this case, Holidays Inc is looking to implement a combination of systems so that it can able to manage its operational process much more effectively (Haux et al. 2013). Hence, Holidays Inc will have to evaluate the cost relating to the change or implementation of new system. So that it can able to invest in the proposed information system process in a much more effective way. Step 4: This step of change manage will have to consider about the risk management strategies of Holidays Inc. Since, implementation of combinations of information system does demand a huge amount of investment from the company (Van De Walle et al. 2014). Hence, the change is associated with a certain amount of risk. Change management will allow minimizing the investment risk of the company to a great extent. Step 5: This step involves the communication of the changes to all the stakeholders of Holidays Inc. Since, implementation of system will completely changes the operational process of the company. it can have major impact on the businesses of the company. Hence, communication to the stakeholders is necessary so that they can able to adjust with the new operational process of the company. Step 6: Communication with the stakeholders will allow Holidays Inc to provide training and other facilities to the internal stakeholders of the company so that they can able to adjust with the new system much more effectively. Since, implementation of new system demands specific skills from the employees. Therefore, it will help the organization to handle the changes in much more effective way. In addition, employees will also can cope up with the new system challenges. Step 7: Lastly, implementation of new system will also create new roles for every employee to handle. As a result, Holidays Inc. will have to segregate all roles of the organizations so that they can able to manage new challenges arises because of the change in a effective manner. Role segregation is change management will also allow Holidays Inc. to minimize the chances of arising confusion in the workplace. These are the proposed steps for Holidays Inc that the organization will have to perform in order to manage the changes in a best possible way. References: Buchanan, M.A., 2014. Iroquois Kinship free essay sample

This paper is going to introduce the Iroquois kinship. Kinship can best be defined as a system of social relationships, or in simpler terms a system of family. Kinship can be seen in our everyday lives within our own circle of family and friends, and how we classify them in regards to importance and how we treat them based on our classifications of them. Kinship can best be defined as a system of social relationships, or in simpler terms a system of family. Kinship involves how people classify each other, the rules that affect people’s behavior and people’s actual behavior† (Nowak and Laird, 2010). Kinship can be seen in our everyday lives within our circle of family and friends, and how we classify them in regards to importance and how we treat them based on our classifications of them. For example, you may love your best friend and treat them with respect but would you respect your best friend more than you respect your mother? This provides us with an insight o f the kinship systems. We will write a custom essay sample on Iroquois Kinship or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The Iroquois are a female dominated group. Unlike most societies, the Iroquois trace their ancestry through the women making them a matrilineal society. It is a culture of responsibility and respect, where each person is valued for their contribution to the group. Women are the main producers of food and owners of the land. Men help by clearing and burning forest areas to prepare for farming and hunting small game. The younger adults are expected to do a greater share of the work due to their youth, strength, and stamina† (Laird and Nowak, 2010). The structure of the Iroquois kinship system gives responsibilities of all members regardless of age of their sex. â€Å"The males are responsible for hunting and clearing the land. The younger adults are expected to do a greater share of the work due to their youth, strength, and stamina† (Laird and Nowak, 2010). The Iroquois people are known as the Haudenosaunee or The People of the Longhouse. The Iroquois Indians are a horticultural society located in the Northeast region of North America. Horticultural societies use a atrilineal system of succession because the women have the primary responsibility for provision of food and goods for the family. This includes property, land, hunting and fishing territories, animals, and even knowledge. The likelihood of a society being or remaining a matrilineal society depends upon how much food is obtained from hunting and herding. The more men contribute by gathering food, the greater their importance and roles will become. Because the Iroquois primarily rely on farmed foods for sustenance and trading, the women maintain the power status (Nowak amp; Laird, 2010). The Iroquois live in long houses because they have large extended families. In the Iroquois culture, the woman in a marriage holds most of the power. After a marriage the husband lives with the wife’s community. The longhouses provide separate living quarters for each family to occupy. Divorce exists as part of the Iroquois culture. If the wife no longer desires to be married, she simply places her husband’s belongings in front of the house indicating he has been removed from the family. If there are children involved, the children will remain with the mother. There some similarities between our culture and the Iroquois. The role of the female can be correlated when thinking of providing food for the family. The women gather food at the store as opposed to harvesting in the fields. Men also seem to have a correlation in they work they have responsibility to complete. Many males are involved in hunting for food and preparing an area or situation the female needs to complete a task much as the Iroquois prepare the field for planting. When comparing the Iroquois culture of kinship to personal family situations, many similarities emerged. The family members care for the elderly members in their homes. Several generations live in each of the homes. One family, living in a daughter’s home, includes the oldest grandmother, the grand-daughter and her husband, and two grand-sons. Another family unit, living in the daughter’s home, includes the second eldest woman and her husband, their daughter, a grand-daughter and two great-grandchildren. The daughters care for the older generation as well as helping the younger generation as they grow. The elder members of the family often try to run everyone else’s lives by instructing them on what they should and should not do and when they should do it. The Iroquois culture is one of the rare cultures of the world because it practices matrilineal descent. The Iroquois are matrilineal, the women hold most of the power in their tribes. Women are large contributors to the Iroquois food sources and greatly influence decisions made in the tribe. In a Iroquois marriage is where the woman holds most of her power and the children belong to her clan. If she is not satisfied with her husband, she can simply pack his things for him and send him back to his childhood tribe. The Iroquois used nature and the natural resources around them to meet their needs. The Iroquois is a matrilineal culture. Unlike most societies the Iroquois are a female dominated group and every person in the family has their own responsibilities. Each person is valued for their contribution to the group.

The fbi

The fbi Federal bureau investigation, the FBI, is considered the strongest police agency in the United States because it has control over other police agencies around the states. The FBI as a police agency has its pluses and minuses; therefore, looking for searching for serial killers and control other police agencies are some of its pluses. In the other hand, the over react of dealing with civilians, and the unsupervised job that they do hold to be some of its minuses. One of the most important jobs that the FBI does is to chase and follow dangerous serial killers who in danger their society. One example of that is catching the train serial killer. Rafael Martinez or Angel Martinez, who was hiding in other country which, makes the other police agencies incapable of getting him back. In addition, another important job that the FBI does is to check and control other police agencies if they fail to function as they supposed to be functioned.English: Standing on Pennsylvania Avenue NW and lo...T he FBI makes it almost impossible for some police members to be corrupted. Are juvenile transfer laws effective and does it deter recidivism Research Paper

Are juvenile transfer laws effective and does it deter recidivism - Research Paper Example Recently many of the states have established many laws to that expands the scope and purview of the transfer laws under which the juvenile offenders may be directly prosecuted within the realms of an adult court. It was during the 1980s that many legal reforms were framed to bring in stringent measures as regards juvenile crime. One such reform of great significance was the amendment of transfer laws that led to an increase in their jurisdiction (Griffin, 2003). These changes allowed the inclusion of more offense types, and resulted in an increase in the number of young offenders becoming eligible for transfer from juvenile courts to the adult courts. These amendments elevated the total number of offenses that were regarded as being transfer-eligible offenses, lowered the necessary minimum age limit for allowing transfer eligibility, broadened discretionary powers of the prosecution, while decreasing the discretionary powers of the judiciary in taking decision related to transfer cas es (Fagan and Zimring, 2000). A look at the amendments made in the state transfer laws show us that, in 1979 14 US States had transfer laws that allowed certain juvenile criminals to be prosecuted like adult criminals. However by 1995, we find there were 21 States with transfer laws in place, and in 2003, the number rose even further, where 31 States had transfer laws (Steiner and Hemmens, 2003). Furthermore the minimum age for end of juvenile court jurisdiction in 13 states were decreased to 15-16 years (Snyder and Sickmund, 2006, 64-70). In the face of these amendments, the number of juvenile offenders tried in adult criminal courts and later imprisoned in adult prison... The paper tells that evidences from the study of the general deterrent effects of juvenile transfer laws are rather inconclusive and one cannot arrive to any derivations from these studies. The majority of the studies however tend to show that there is very little, or almost zero general deterrent effect, as regards deterring recidivism in the context of juvenile crimes, which are serious in nature. More research work is necessary for exploring the actual deterrent effects of transfer laws, under the appropriate conditions, on the juvenile offenders. On examining the issue of specific deterrence effects of transfers laws, it was found that were primarily six major published studies. These six studies suggested that juvenile offenders tried under adult criminal court laws tend to exhibit increased rates of recidivism after completing their prison term, than the young offenders tried under the juvenile laws. The scholars however do not clarify whether the transfer laws influence recidi vism for property related crimes (non-violent types) and drug offenses. The six large-scale studies conducted on particular deterrent effects used large size of sample population (ranging from 494 to 5,476), varying research methodologies, examined various recidivism measures, and covered five States (Pennsylvania, New York, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Florida) each exhibiting varying sets of transfer laws (prosecutorial, automatic, or judicial types).

Indicators of health paper Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Indicators of health paper - Coursework Example An analysis of certain indicators of health and evaluation of the determinants of health is done in this essay to ascertain the cause of poor health in the country. Indicators of health The indicators of health which can be compared and evaluated are death rate, infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate. According to statistics of Haiti, in the year 2009, the death rate is 8.65 per 1000, infant mortality rate is 59.69 per 1000 live births and maternal mortality ratio, as determined in the year 2005 is 670 per 100,000 deliveries (Global Health Facts, 2010). In the United States, according to the 2009 statistics, the death rate is 8.38, the infant mortality rate is 6.25 per 1000 live births and the maternal mortality rate according to 2005 statistics was 11, per 100,000 deliveries (Global Health Facts, 2010). On comparing all the 3 indicators, it is evident that despite similar death rates in both the countries, the infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate are very hig h in Haiti when compared to the US. Determinants of health Key determinants of health in Haiti are poverty, illiteracy, environmental factors like calamities and political factors like violence. During its creation, the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948 defined health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Critics argued the completeness of this definition and in 1986, in the Ottawa Charter for health Promotion, the WHO modified the definition of health and defined it as "a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities." Even this definition has not been accepted completely and thus several models of health have come up in an aim to provide complete definition of health. Health is determined by an interplay of several factors which are known as health determinants. The main determinants o f health are social factors, environmental factors, physical environment and; various behaviors and characteristics of the individual. While some of these determinants are in the control of the individual, many factors are beyond the scope of direct control of the individual. These factors contribute to health inequalities in a society. Some such factors include social status and income, education status, physical environment of the individual at home and work place, "social support networks", individual genetics, accessibility to various health services and gender (WHO, 2010). Higher the income, higher is the health status of an individual. Thus, poverty is a major contributor for health inequality. Individuals with lower education levels have poorer health status, lower levels of self esteem and decreased self confidence when compared to those with higher education status. Physical environment constitutes of clean and safe air, water, environment and food at home and workplace. Th ose who have better support form friends, family member and various community groups enjoy better health than those who do not have established social networks. Genetics often influences health -related behaviours like smoking, alcohol, coping skills and balanced intake of food and thus indirectly influences health of an individual (WHO, 2010). Public health researchers have identified social determinants as the main cause for health inequa

Effects of Mass Media Essay Example for Free

Effects of Mass Media Essay The benefits that the society gets from mass media have undeniably led to the heavy reliance of people to media for information and entertainment. While the society perceives the media information as either real or important, the media shapes the values and culture of people into an entirely new concept that always end up to the conclusion that the world has been changing because of advancement in terms of technology. From selling goods to giving salient issues, the people can rely on the power of mass media. The heavy reliance of society to media may had been evident in the lifestyle of the mainstream; however, the information that the society keeps nowadays constantly change, molding the psychological and sociological aspects of the next generation. Mass media plays a very important role in the society. The people have been relying on the capability of media to inform, entertain, and provide all the necessary information that the individuals need. The people cannot deny the benefits that they gain from media for different purposes. In fact, its influences in the society have been evident not only through the development of the world in terms of technology but also through the culture and perceptions that the people have nowadays. Media exposures show that media consumption has measurable effects on the perceptions of the society. The people use media information and their actions, judgments, and attitudes are unconsciously being affected by the media messages. The society has been showing too many evidences of media effects; however, the people seem to recognize the benefits of media sources more rather than the negative impacts that it brings to the public. Each media concept has a target audience and the effects vary depending on the level of involvement of the audience and the status of a certain cluster in the society. Apparently, the modern media has been targeting the cluster of the society which can easily be reached and influenced—the young generation. Due to continuous release of media concepts and endless influx of technology, does media still portray images that would help for the betterment of the young adults? What are the negative effects of media concepts to the young generation? Media Images in 20th Century As the world conforms to modernity, the media images have been constantly changing giving the people new ideas and information in fashion trends, technology, and current events. The media sources keep on providing information and the people stay connected with the media information not only to be updated with the changes but because of the availability of resources that would connect the people and the media regardless of their location. Today, media is far different from the media that people have known in the past century. The television shows are more advanced and the films and advertisements show evidences of development in terms of media tools and concepts. Consequently, the society get use to seeing new concepts everyday and the post modern world leave the people with no choice but to conform in order to survive. Even though the society has been criticizing the media for the offensive images that media portrays, the mainstream still relies on the information that media could provide for them. Media sources boomed not only for entertainment but also for commercial purposes in twentieth century. From business to entertainment, the media has been the source of information of any cluster of the society. Today, the young generation can be seen on media sources endorsing consumer goods or promoting services to the society. While some teens appear to be wholesome, some are being criticized for negative underlying messages to the mainstream. Some media sources portray the fun of being a teenager in this modern society and some messages convey a message that the young adults are the hope of the future generation. On the contrary, there are films and television shows that portray aggression and violence. The advertisements portray images of thin and skinny young women who endorse products to the market. The modern youth are being perceived as materialistic, socially aggressive, and partying individuals because of the images that the mainstream sees on media sources. Positive Impacts of Mass Media on Teens The society has been blaming the mass media for making the young adults change their perceptions toward certain matter and behave exactly opposite of how people expect them to be. The society recalls the images that they have seen on media sources which are often considered as negative due to the effects that these portrayals brought to them. Apparently, the effects of mass media have been in the heart of debate in the society because most people perceive media in negative aspect while some still consider the benefits that the society gets from it. Due to negative images on media, the society often fails to recognize the positive effects that media can give to the public. Although some parents perceive television as helpful in developing the mind of their children, the society on the other hand, points out this perception as effect of media brainwashing. The heavy reliance of people on media has been the effect of the society’s acceptance to all the messages that are being conveyed on all media sources.

Styles of Leadership Essay -- Leader Papers

Styles of Leadership Styles of leadership are neither inherently good nor inherently bad, despite the fact that one or another may become all the rage for a time. The best way to judge what leadership style is right for a particular company is to measure how consistent that style is with the owner's personality, the type of work being done, and the nature of the work force. While there are hundreds of subtle variations and scores of cute names for them, there are really only three primary leadership styles: the autocratic leader, the laissez-faire leader, and the democratic leader. The autocratic leader The most dictatorial leaders are the autocrats. There are the leaders knownaround the company as The Bosses. There are people who impose their will, take full responsibility for all decision making, and emphasize product over process. Autocratic leaders work best with a staff of people who are unwilling to make decisions, and are uninterested in demonstrating initiative. With a laser-like emphasis on results, autocratic leaders can produce reliable products of high quality in...
